Monthly legal advice clinics will provide free services to Bastrop-area residents beginning in January. Members of the Bastrop County Bar Association, Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS), and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) are collaborating to sponsor clinics on the first Tuesday of each month.
The public will be able to seek advice on a variety of non-criminal topics such as divorce, foreclosure, veterans’ benefits, wills and estates, bankruptcy, employment, and landlord/tenant matters. The advice clinics will be staffed by volunteer lawyers from the Bastrop County Bar Association and staff of VLS and TRLA. The clinics will have Spanish translators available.
“Many low and moderate income citizens have questions about issues like wills, student loans, or other legal concerns and don’t know who to ask,” says Caroline McClimon, incoming President of the Bastrop County Bar Association. “And because we have been hit with so many natural disasters, a variety of other questions have arisen. We are grateful to the Bastrop Independent School District for giving us a location and look forward to assisting our neighbors with their questions. “
Lawyers will meet with participants for about 15 minutes to answer legal questions. Participants should bring any papers related to their legal concerns.
Participants must sign in by 6:30 pm. Attorneys will not meet with anyone arriving after 6:30 pm. Participants will be asked to fill out information about themselves, including income information, and to explain their legal problem.
“For many in our community, the cost of hiring an attorney is prohibitive,” notes District Court Judge Christopher Duggan. “The value of these free legal clinics is that a person has the opportunity to ask a lawyer a legal question one-to-one and get valuable direction on the merits of a case and possible next steps. With such advice, a person may be able to handle the matter on their own. The clinics will be a great service to our community.”
If people cannot attend the event, bi-weekly legal clinics are held in Austin. For more information, call TRLA at (512)374-2700 or visit www.trla.org. .
Every year, the Association hosts two nights of Dinner Theatre and one matinee performance to raise money for the Bobby Jenkins Memorial Scholarship that distributes $10,000 in scholarships to Bastrop County High School students.
In 2017, the Bastrop County Bar Association hosted a dedication ceremony to honor Orange Wicks, Bastrop County’s first black justice of the peace.
Improbable and inspiring, Wicks’ story is one worth celebrating. After spending nearly twenty years of his life in slavery, he moved to Bastrop county and established a life for himself around the year 1868. Within just a few years Wicks had met his future wife Anna and established himself as a school teacher. In a testament to his value to the community, Wicks was elected justice of the peace for Precinct 3 in 1888. Although at times controversial, the life of Orange Wicks is best characterized by his leadership and commitment to the Bastrop County community. The Bastrop County Bar Association recently held a scholarship fundraiser that included a performance reenacting parts of Wicks’ life. The success of that fundraiser has allowed the funding of numerous scholarships for local students, and the installment of missing tombstones at the grave site of Mr. and Mrs. Wicks.
